By CyberPunk February 27, 2013 7:53 AM PST As already stated it will not run.exe files in normal mode, but works perfectly fine in safe mode.

All right H2G here's a conundrum for you.
My .exe files won't open.
Everytime I try to open one it says 'choose the program you want to use to open this file.'
So I used my phone internet to search answers since I couldn't work mine.
Long story short nothings worked.
I opened Firefox by opening firefox then selecting firefox as the program to open firefox with. wtf right?
Anyways sys32 is still there. I opened it to get to cmd cause it wouldn't open with run.
I've tried
--------------------
assoc.exe=exefile
----------------------
my computer said:
-----------------------------
access is denied.
Error occured while processing: .EXE.
-----------------------------------------
I also tried making a batch file that says 'assoc.exe=exefile' saved it as ( fileassoc.bat )then tried making another batch file that says
'runas /user:USERNAMEadministrator C:fileassoc.bat
pause'
It told me to enter admin pass, which i did then..
----------------------------------------------------------------
attempting to start C:fileassoc.bat as user 'USERNAMEadministrator'..
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - C:fileassoc.bat
1326: Logon failure: Unknown user or bad password
---------------------------------------------------------------
ok so a few things that would help to know:
1. I know i have correct username and pass.
2. This failure of exe files occurred immediately following the removal of the 'win 7 home security 2012' virus
3. I used malware bytes to remove it. after removal i was prompted to restart my computer, which i did.
4. Then to double check it was gone I tried to run malwarebytes again. It said 'choose the program you want to use to open this file.' So I figured it wouldn't work on my admin user because i had to use my guest user to download, install, and run it.
5. So then I was like 'oh well' and deleted it using control panel, remove programs.
---------------------------------------
Well thats it.
please..please help

also If this should prove fruitless and i say 'screw it' how would i restore my computer to factory default. like out of the box?

Paste it in notepad and save it as file.reg
double click and merge

Nope. Didn't work. :(
the registry updated alright and i followed the website also but.. no luck

Ok, Generally when the modification is made in registry by some infection then only the current accounts are affected, Assuming there are no other infections try creating a new account and see whether you can open .exe from there? If then run hijackthis log and paste here also try the reg method
Plus try Super antispyware , Its extension is .com so it should be able to run even if .exe are not working

that was fast.

So exes are working now
TRY THESE STEPS IN SAFE MODE w/ networking (f8 before windows boot)
I need time to analyze them , Why not try SAS , avira/avg or other anti virus , Microsoft malicious software removal tool (mrt.exe in run) , spybot S&D , check for consistency and integrity of files (sfc/scannow in cmd.exe) and then post the log again
ALso run ccleaner for removal of entry which was left by above infection removals (just in case)

Back up your important data
Sometimes using system restore revives the infection aswell so try disabling system restore (turn off system restore on all drives under advance options in my computer)
THIS WILL DELETE ALL THE SYSTEM RESTORE POINTS

if you all exe files are not opening , so you might have the Sality Virus , install symantec antivirus 11 and remove it with it..

Do you have a windows 7 install/repair disk?
Have you tried running a repair? (NOT a reinstall, unless you want to lose your data!)
If you were infected with a virus then you could try something like the kapersky rescue disk - It might clean up what was left:
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/36403/how-to-use-the-kaspersky-rescue-disk-to-clean-your-infected-pc/

Good Luck!

I give up. I don't even.. I'll make back-ups of important stuff. I'm gonna go make a different forum post for 'How to factory reset my computer.'
Thanks for all your help!

Hang on a sec!
I might be worth waiting for some of the.. Older members of the community to help you! I'm only 12!
This is a fairy common problem, and I'm sure someone like Lighthouse will be able to help - It's still the middle of the night is some parts of the world! Wait for them to wake up!

It might be worth removing the solved status, as they might ignore it otherwise!

MiniGeek

Try the EXE fix from here,

thank you minigeek for not giving up on me.
and thank you lighthouse so much it worked!!!

Hi,

Prank your friends by secretly opening this website on their computer while they're away. Wait for them to return and watch their reaction. Dec 18, 2014  Android emulators/simulators are largely required to run Android apps & games on PC (Windows 7/8/8.1/10). However, choosing the correct Android emulator might become a daunting task, as if not selected properly they can really slow down your Computer (e.g Duos M). Windows 7 desktop emulator download. Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for your interest in Windows 10.

In order to help you better, could you please confirm a couple of things:

  1. Which program .exe files are you referring too?
  2. Are you getting any error message?
  3. Do you have firewall enabled on your computer?

I suggest you to disable the firewall and then try to run the .exe file.

NOTE: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Also you can create new user account and check if it helps.

b. Click on Settings.
c. Click on Accounts.
d. Click on Your accounts.
e. Under other accounts you use select ‘Add a Microsoft account’.

Hope this information was helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.

I just got rid of a nasty virus that, among other things, deleted Office 365 from my computer - now I can't open any exe file that comes from Microsoft. Please let me know how to fix this. I suspect it's a registry issue but not sure.

Thank's Karthicka_R for your attention,

Yes I really get an error message below: (this one of an example that couldn't run)

and my firewall enable too. I already try to turn off the firewall, antivirus and reinstall it but still have the same problem.

I checked that file and already exist on that folder.

I suggest that the problem cause by .lnk and or shortcut file had broken link, but I didn't know how to rebuild it again, I tried repair with repair tools but didn't solve the problem.

Regards,

Hi,

Thank you for the update.

You may want to install those programs in compatibility mode and check.

a. Right click the driver installation file and select Properties then tap or click the Compatibility tab.

b. Place a check in the Run this program in compatibility mode for: box.

c. Tap or click the drop down box and select a previous operating system, then tap or click OK.

d. Try installing the driver and check.

You may refer to: Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows (information holds good for Windows 10 as well)

Hope this helps.
